Cours thématiques d'anglais n°6 : The Vikings in the British Isles: An Introduction (C1) (SOUS RÉSERVE)

According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the raid of the monastery in Lindisfarne in 793 by Vikings was preceded by bad omens: “immense whirlwinds and flashes of lightning” and “fiery dragons […] flying in the air”. Yet, in the end, Vikings proved a greater danger than dragons for people living in the British Isles: the Great Heathen Army came close to conquering all of England, and Vikings settled in regions as far as Ireland and Scotland.

In this course, we will explore the history of the Vikings in the British Isles (England, but also Ireland and Scotland), and examine the lasting impact they have had on British culture.
