In the 21^st century, there has been a revival of books, films and television series set during the Viking invasion of England. From the Viking raid on Lindisfarne in 793 (shown in Vikings) to the Battle of Brunanburh (depicted in The Last Kingdom), these shows portray key historical events while also featuring both legendary figures like Ragnar Loðbrok (Vikings) and significant historical leaders such as Alfred the Great (in both Vikings and The Last Kingdom).

Through an analysis of selected excerpts from The Last Kingdom (BBC Two / Netflix, 2015 – 2023) and Vikings (History, 2013 – 2020), this class aims to explore the key tropes used to depict this specific period of English history in modern television dramas.
