Description

Comparing European cities: architecture and urbanism

Docent: Alexandre Kostka and associated academics and practicians

What makes Europe “unique”? From the outside, one of the most frequent replies is the complex network of European cities, which developed since the Roman times until the present days in a dynamic of “urban dialogues”. The aim of this seminar is to bring together academics and students from different fields – art history, architecture, cultural history and European studies – in order to develop small academic projects centered around concrete cases, based on personal experience and/or research interests. A first outline of the results will be presented in form of a junior round table in mid-December 2025 at the occasion of the opening of the exhibition “From Empire to Europe: Strasbourg and Poznan (1800-2000)” (to take place in the Strasbourg National Architecture School, ENSAS). Seminar participants will be associated to the preparation of this exhibition, in order to gain a “hands on” experience alongside methodological insights.

The seminar will take place as a sequence of full-day blocked seminars, alternatively in Karlsruhe and Strasbourg, in the frame of a Eucor-sponsored bilateral cooperation between the University of Strasbourg and the KIT. Working languages will be English and German (for KIT students only). Students will be graded on a final essay, developed in a collaborative spirit during the seminar.
